Why Did We Like It?

First things first, this Apple Pencil is equipped to produce the finest lines on the tablet screen using the pressure-based variations in its drawing ability. The sides of its tip are meant for creating wider strokes required for shading, while the tip also helps mark a fine point wherever you need one.

Moving on, it projects flawless and quite expressive control in the course of any digital art project, flowing perfectly on the tablet screens. Note that this includes the efficient palm rejection and tilt recognition abilities that facilitate absolute consistency while drawing.

Long story short, this stylus pen helps you get through the most intricate and extensive drawing projects smoothly.

Another strong point of the Apple Pencil is its comfortable and natural design. Offering a premium-quality feel and enough heft, it felt great in our hands and didn’t cause any fatigue despite prolonged use.

What Could’ve Been Better?

If you’re considering this 2nd generation Apple stylus pen, keep in mind that its older version doesn’t offer wireless charging, unlike most other stylus pens on the market. This naturally limits its portability while charging and makes it less convenient to handle.

Pros
  • Helps draw both fine and wide lines
  • Facilitates absolute consistency while drawing
  • Premium-quality feel
  • Comfortable to use
Cons
  • Doesn’t offer wireless charging

2. Apple Pencil (Ist Generation)

This Apple model is a predecessor of the 2nd Generation Pencil, which is why both the models have several features in common. At the same time, the model has quite a few distinct specifications that lend the versatility and fluidity needed for completing any drawing project with ease.

Why Did We Like It?

The best part about this Apple Pencil is the accuracy and responsiveness it offers on most iPad screens. This can help any artist create flawless portraits and other more intricate artworks with the finesse that’s seldom achievable on a normal canvas.

To elaborate further, the fine tip with a pressure-sensitive point lets you draw thicker or thinner lines with the same accuracy. On the other hand, the efficient palm rejection feature ensures the screen remains unaffected even when you put a hand on it while drawing.

Plus, the compatibility of this device extends to the iPad (5th, 6th, and 8th generation versions), iPad mini 5, iPad Air 3, iPad Pro 1 and 2, and many more tablets. And thanks to the lightning connector on the back end of the pencil, you can charge it quickly via an iPad pro.

What Could’ve Been Better?

Contrary to the claims of the brand that this stylus pen comes weighted to enable easy handling, we found that it often rolled off the table. This makes it more prone to accidental damage. Also, it’s slightly thicker than the 2nd generation counterpart, so some people might find it less comfortable to use.

Pros
  • Responsive and accurate
  • Efficient palm rejection
  • Vast compatibility
  • Quickly chargeable
Cons
  • Slightly heavy

3. RENAISSER

If you’re on the hunt for a cost-effective yet high-performing stylus for a Microsoft Surface tablet, this Renaisser stylus will undoubtedly be a great pick. Weighing a mere 14 g and measuring 9.2 mm in diameter, the stylus comes with a host of utility-based features that make you feel like you’re drawing on paper.

Why Did We Like It?

First off, the superior pressure sensitivity of this stylus pen differentiates it from other similar options on the market. Thanks to the use of advanced MMP 2.0 technology, it lets you shade and sketch precisely with as many as 4,096 different pressure sensitivities. Notably, you can use this stylus with most Surface tablets, including the Surface Pro 8 that was launched late last year.

Each of these responds to even a light touch quite efficiently, making your sketches and drawings more consistent and visually appealing. Moreover, the streamlined design facilitates greater ease of use for extended periods. That’s how handling larger projects can become a cakewalk for digital artists and designers opting for this stylus.

Not only that, but a 20-minute charge provides the device with enough power for 50 hours of continuous use. Lastly, its surface has a magnetic flat portion that facilitates convenient storage along with the tablet.

What Could’ve Been Better?

A few customers wished the pen came with an automatic turn-on functionality after it was docked. Turning it on manually each time after resuming the drawing may indeed be a hassle. However, most users were quite satisfied with its performance on the whole.

Pros
  • Superior pressure sensitivity
  • Designed for ease of use
  • Superfast charging
  • Easy to store

Why Did We Like It?

At the core of the Microsoft surface pen are 4096 pressure points that provide the ultimate precision in both sketching and shading. These respond to a light touch to promote a consistent flow of precision ink from the tip, eliminating gaps in between the strokes.

Additionally, you can wipe off any mistake using the high-quality rubber eraser on the other end of the stylus. Such features allow you to make sketches just the way you would using a graphite pencil.

And that’s not all; you can even combine the Surface Pen with a range of applications, including OneNote, Adobe Suite, and Drawboard for your drawing needs. So, whether it’s making an animated video or 3D CAD designs, or a large portrait, this stylus lets you pull it off in the best way possible.

Last but not least, the stylus is available in four elegant colors, viz. blue, poppy red, black, and platinum.

What Could’ve Been Better?

The LED indicator of this drawing stylus might not function consistently. Sometimes, it may not light up instantly after it’s turned on and might also turn off while you’re working. In case you face similar issues with the product, you must get in touch with customer support as soon as possible.

  • Helps in precise sketching and shading
  • Maintains adequate consistency
  • Compatible with many drawing applications
  • Available in four different colors

Why Did We Like It?

Firstly, the combination of Pixelpoint tip and a paper-like drag lends this stylus pen a more natural feel while drawing, irrespective of the project you’re dealing with.

Adding to the efficiency of the device is the provision of more than 2000 pressure sensitivity levels and an improved palm rejection functionality. As such, it facilitates drawing and writing on the exact spot you want on Android tablets.

There are also a couple of shortcut buttons that you can program as per your needs to easily access frequently utilized tools like “redo” and “erase.”

Apart from an Android tablet, the Pixel can be used with the majority of iPads, including the Pro 12.9 inch and the Air 2. Even the battery life while in continuous use is commendable, as charging it for one hour ensures the device lasts as long as 15 hours.

Moreover, there’s an efficient indicator to tell you about the remaining battery.

What Could’ve Been Better?

The only drawback of this tablet pen is that the rubber on the opposite side of the stylus tip might be displaced due to regular use. A few customers reported that the rubber gave in and slipped out after a couple of months, so they had to order replacement parts from the brand.

Pros
  • Lends a natural feel while drawing
  • Facilitates easy access to common tools
  • Compatible with most iPad models
  • Pretty long battery life
Cons
  • Rubber tip may not remain in position

Why Did We Like It?

The precision disc tip of this active stylus is undoubtedly its most noteworthy feature. Interestingly, it simulates a finger-like touch to enable sensitive and precise contact on the tablet screen. That’s why it’s least likely to cause any scratch while being used for drawing or scrolling. Plus, such efficient sensitivity also brings perfection to the drawing and prevents any lag.

The eraser for this stylus is actually composed of a soft, high-quality fiber tip that also works like your fingers but provides better accuracy. That said, you shouldn’t apply too much force while erasing any mistake as that might damage the fiber.

Other beneficial aspects include hassle-free wireless rechargeability and the inclusion of extra disc tips and erasers in the package.

As for the compatibility of this accessory, we found it to be suitable for a range of touchscreen devices, including the iPads released between 2018 and 2020.

What Could’ve Been Better?

Replacing the tips and erasers might seem a bit tricky as the instruction manual has the steps mentioned rather briefly. So, it would be best to refer to some online videos in case you find it too difficult. That said, we have no complaints regarding the performance of this stylus.

What impressed us the most about this stylus was the availability of 8192 levels of pressure sensitivity, which puts it ahead of many other high-performing options. Such a superior-grade sensitivity brings the ultimate precision in any drawing so that you’re able to recreate your ideas on the canvas in the best way possible.

Furthermore, the report rate of 266 PPS and resolution of 5080 LPI lets you draw, sketch, or paint just as smoothly as you want.

Not to forget the two programmable buttons on the pen surface that allow you to set their function to the more frequently used commands. Plus, a palm rejection feature on either side of the stylus helps regulate touch frequency and create any drawing effectively.

Another significant advantage is its battery-free operation, which does away with the hassle of recharging after every battery run-out and handling charging cables. Instead, the stylus comes with 8 additional pen nibs to enable extended use.

What Could’ve Been Better?

A drawback of this pen is its less durable surface material, due to which the surface might suffer wear and tear upon regular use. We also found the top coating to be less durable as the external finish faded slightly after just two months of continuous use.

Furthermore, working with this pen is quite convenient as you can rest your hands on the screen without affecting the drawing in any way. There’s also a durable eraser fixed firmly on the other end, which helps clear mistakes quickly and effectively.

Lastly, the stylus can help bring your ideas to life just the way you desire by virtue of its compatibility with most drawing applications.

What Could’ve Been Better?

We only wished this stylus came with a wireless charging facility as that would’ve made it one of the most convenient options on the whole. The battery-powered operation makes it mandatory to carry extra batteries if you wish to accompany the drawing tablet on your travels.

Pros
  • Enables natural drawing experience
  • Efficient artistic precision
  • Quick and effective correction
  • Compatible with most drawing applications
Cons
  • Doesn’t offer wireless charging

Moreover, the smooth tip is also safe for use on the screen and doesn’t make noise unlike ordinary active stylus pens.

Another aspect worth noting is the brush paint-coated body of the pen along with its sleek and well-balanced design. Such features not only provide a stylish, modern look that goes well with any iPad but also makes it easy to use.

Adding to the convenience is a power button on the pen that does away with the need for a bluetooth connection. So, you just have to press the button to start recording your creation anywhere and anytime.

Stylus Pens Buying Guide

Choosing the most suitable stylus as per your needs might seem confusing if you can’t understand where to start from. Simply put, you should have a clear idea about certain key factors that ultimately determine the performance of a stylus. So, let’s have a brief look at each of them:

1. Capacitive Vs Active Styluses

As you might have noticed, we’ve used the term “Active Sstylus” for quite a few options on our list. On that note, let us tell you that styluses are classified as capacitive and active based on their compatibility with apps that require pressure sensitivity.

While active styluses only work with such apps, which ultimately heightens the drawing experience, the capacitive ones don’t and are more basic ones. Note that you can use a capacitive stylus only for smaller projects that don’t require superior accuracy.

2. Stylus Nibs and Tip

Firstly, know that the choice of the nibs and tip of the pen would depend on your general drawing needs.

For those who regularly work on more intricate drawings and designs, it will be best to go for a fine tip that’s capable of making strokes of all thicknesses. Note that such tips will offer better pressure sensitivity, though taking more pressure implies they might wear out more quickly.

3. Other Important Features

Apart from the nature of the tip and the pressure sensitivity, there are several crucial features that affect the performance of a stylus in many ways.

These include tilt control, palm rejection, compatibility, and eraser type. While the first two functions on the list help keep the drawings intact while you’re working on-on-go, the other two are basic to purchasing any drawing stylus.

Frequently Asked Questions ?

Q1. How long will a stylus pen last?

The longevity of a stylus will primarily depend on its quality and the frequency of use. Notably, the more rugged and frequent is your use, the shorter will be its battery life. But a stylus used more carefully and steadily might last longer than other options.

On that note, keep in mind that you should get a replacement when you feel its quality and precision have degraded.

Q2. What’s the difference between a digital pen and a stylus?

Styluses are generally much thinner and smaller than digital pens since they contain no internal electronic components. Moreover, several digital pens are more than just drawing or writing tools; for instance, they often come with built-in capabilities to record audio.

On the other hand, styluses are mainly used to manipulate and input information on a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) device.

Best stylus pens for drawing

Verdict

That has almost brought us to the end of our guide. We hope you’re more confident about choosing a suitable drawing stylus now. So, don’t delay taking the best step towards improving your drawing productivity.

But before we bring down the curtains, let’s share with you our top picks from the list.

The 2nd Generation Apple Pencil is the best all-rounder in our opinion, thanks to its convenient design and superior pressure and tilt sensitivities. On the other hand, the Apple Pencil (Ist Generation) offers standard precision and accuracy that’s suitable for artists who generally handle smaller projects.

It’s time to bid goodbye for now, but we’ll return with more review-based guides on drawing gadgets, so stay tuned!
