In Europe, in the middle of the 1950s, a young generation of architects refuses the hyper functionalist diktat and dreams of another way to imagine the city and the habitat. Spacial or mobile cities, bubble houses, underground or flying, architecture becomes a surpassing territory for experimentation, driven by technological innovation and the opening up to multiple new territories.
Exploring the fantastic world for architectural utopia, this film by Julien Donada in collaboration with FRAC Centre takes us on an excursion through experimental architecture from the 1950s to the 1970s.
Taking in consideration the master pieces of the FRAC Centre collection as well as exceptional interviews with witnesses of this generation (Yona Friedman, Michel Ragon, Peter Cook, Hans Hollein, Claude Parent, Andrea Branzi…), the documentary offers a new historical reading of “visionary” projects that have become icons of contemporary culture.
