OMA will be transforming four former warehouses into the central space for Alserkal Avenue, Dubai’s most important art district.
Located in the Al Qouz industrial area, Alserkal Avenue, now home to twenty-five contemporary art galleries and arts spaces, was founded in 2007 with the aim of promoting cultural initiatives in the region. OMA’s project will address Alserkal Avenue’s need for a centrally located space to host their growing number of diverse public events.
The 1,000 m2, multi-purpose space will accommodate exhibitions, lectures, fashion shows and social gatherings. The design introduces a flexible floor plan with four 8.10 m moveable walls, which rotate or slide, allowing for different configurations depending on the type of event. The entrance, with full-height transparent sliding doors, strengthens the continuity between the interior and exterior, extending the action and events to the public square outside. The existing exterior shell will be wrapped in a customized concrete spray, distinguishing the building from the other surrounding warehouses.
The event space at Alserkal Avenue is led by Iyad Alsaka and will be OMA’s first built project in Dubai.
