Toronto-based architectural firm superkül announced the launch of the firm’s first book, Rain, Gravity, Heat, Cold.
The 160-page, limited-edition volume illustrates the philosophy, thinking and design approach that define the firm’s award-winning practice and its role in the dynamic and evolving creative landscape in Canada and abroad. It highlights projects from a decade of work and reflects superkül’s organization of matter, energy and space, as well as a diversity of environments that are at once enlivened and enlivening through design.
Among the luxurious, French-folded pages, readers will find a foreword by noted author and architecture critic, Kiel Moe, Associate Professor of Architecture & Energy, Department of Architecture at Harvard University; an interview with the firm’s principals by Eric Beck Rubin, noted Canadian architecture critic and author; photography from some of Canada’s top architectural photographers; form and site studies; and a special credits section honouring the collaborations that make the firm’s work possible — highlighting clients, consultants, colleagues and friends.
The design of the Rain, Gravity, Heat, Cold is a deeply personal, deliberately intuitive experience. The careful, distinct way it was produced, by Blok Design, reflects superkül’s progressive design philosophy and process. The title, the exploratory nature of the format, the subtle paper transitions, the special silver finishes and the different printing techniques used in production, all mirror the organization of materiality that characterize the firm’s work, and set this book apart from other architectural monographs.
Speaking of the book, principal Meg Graham said:
It’s rewarding to have ten years of our work commemorated in this way. The textures, light, materiality, rich spatial layering and quality construction that is essential to our practice shimmer in these pages.
Rain, Gravity, Heat, Cold can currently be purchased in Canada from the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Swipe and other retailers. Internationally, it is available online through Idea Books, amazon.ca and amazon.com.
