A house is more than just four walls and a roof, but that doesn’t mean those four walls aren’t important. Wall lighting has been used in various shapes and forms since the 14th century. This long-standing tradition has continued to thrive and evolve, unlike relics of the past.

While we don’t really roll out of bed in the middle of the night after having a little too much wine with dinner, grab our torch from the sconce on the wall, and carry it as we make our way to the bathroom, we do still use light to guide us.

As a key component of interior design, finding the perfect lighting is not an easy task. Understanding the mood of the space, who will be occupying it, and the style of the home is crucial to creating a cohesive space. If you’re working with a smaller space, lamps are probably out of the question. If you have low ceilings and will be walking through that space frequently, a chandelier is not the way to go. Wall lighting helps people harness the full potential of a space and get as much use out of the square footage as possible.

What is Wall Lighting?

Wall lighting is exactly what it sounds like: lighting fixed to or stemming from a wall.

With all of the fancy chandeliers, lamps, and other lighting fixtures, you might think that there is no place for seemingly dated wall lights. That is certainly not true; this underappreciated household staple is timeless.

Wall lights bring simplicity to a home, bridging rooms and connecting the people inside of them.

What Does Wall Lighting Look Like?

Wall lighting comes in various shapes, sizes, and styles.

Traditional Wall Lighting

Torch Sconce

Torch sconce — Traditionally cone-shaped, made of metal, and fixed to a wall, this was where you put your torch after a long, hard day of running around your family crypt.

Candle Sconce

Candle sconce — Often made of silver or brass and found in pairs, this wall-mounted candle support lined the halls of convents and castles in medieval times.

Lantern hook — This is where Harry Potter would have hung his lantern after his late-night excursion to the restricted section of the Hogwarts library.

It’s important to note that traditional wall lighting required no electricity. The design elements of torch sconces, candle sconces, and lantern hooks are, however, utilized in modern wall lighting.

Modern Wall Lighting
Like many modern design trends, history is built upon to modernize. Since 1984, WAC Lighting has created sustainable, efficient LED lighting fixtures that merge modern and classic silhouettes.

In many houses today, traditional-inspired sconces make an appearance outside at the home entry points. Lanterns illuminate front porches and candles in sconces light up decks. The only difference is that they’re powered by electricity, not fire.

Plug it in! Plug it in!
The coupling of wall sconces and electricity gave way to a host of options, especially when it comes to how the lighting gets its electricity. There are two main ways wall lighting is powered: direct-wiring or by plugging into an electrical outlet.

If you’re designing your home from the ground up, direct wiring may be the way to go because it looks cleaner and is permanent. Plug-in sconces are easier to swap out and an easy way to give your home a face lift.

Along with style changes, modern wall lighting can really enhance the ambiance of a space through the use of dimmer switches, multidirectional light output, and more.

People grow and change, but they never go out of style. The constantly-evolving lighting fixtures mirror those whose homes they will brighten. With such a diverse range of designs, wall lighting is not going anywhere.
