Xiqué Boutique Hotel, designed by Estudio Carroll, in Puerto Escondido, blends relaxation, environmental harmony, cultural preservation, social and economic development, and architectural expression. Situated on a 278-square-meter plot with a 620-square-meter construction, it includes eight rooms, a ground-floor restaurant, and a rooftop terrace with a pool offering panoramic Pacific Ocean views. The design emphasizes orientation, airflow, and environmental sustainability, featuring a south-facing facade, west-facing rooms with sea views, and continuous airflow facilitated by palm bone doors. Nature-based solutions preserve existing trees and treat wastewater naturally. The project uses local materials like earth-pink chukum, palm bone, and macuil wood to reflect regional culture and sustainability. The building’s form maximizes livable space while maintaining visual fluidity inspired by the female form.
Estudio Carroll views architecture as more than just constructing buildings; it serves as a catalyst for joy and harmony, capable of transforming communities and uplifting the human spirit. Their design philosophy emphasizes challenging conventional boundaries and crafting spaces that inspire.
Xiqué Boutique Hotel is a recent project by Estudio Carroll, situated in Puerto Escondido. This boutique hotel seeks to integrate relaxation, environmental harmony, cultural preservation, social and economic development, and architectural expression. This project is set on a 278-square-meter plot with a 620-square-meter construction. It includes eight rooms, a restaurant on the ground floor, and a rooftop terrace with a pool that offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.
The design approach is founded on three key principles: orientation, airflow, and environmental sustainability. The south-facing main facade protects against intense heat while the west-facing rooms offer stunning views of the sea and surrounding nature. The strategic layout of services and circulations ensures smooth movement and functionality, aligning the design with the natural environment and prioritizing user comfort. The predominantly open west facade, shielded with palm bone doors, allows for continuous airflow, leveraging prevailing winds. Grills on the opposite side of the rooms facilitate air circulation throughout the hotel, and the staircase acts as a natural chimney, guiding hot air up and out of the building.
Aligned with the project’s values, nature-based solutions (NBS) were chosen to mitigate potential environmental impacts. Existing trees were preserved by designing the building layout to create an almost 100-square-meter open area. In this space, wetland systems are central to the architectural arrangement, creating a lush garden and terrace for user enjoyment. This system optimizes wastewater recovery through natural processes, simulating and enhancing those that occur in mangroves, marshes, and wetlands without negatively impacting the environment. This approach demonstrates a commitment to sustainability, innovation, and biodiversity, offering a tangible solution to environmental challenges in Puerto Escondido.
Carefully selected materials reflect local culture and sustainability in this project. Most building surfaces are covered with earth-pink chukum, a material that provides passive cooling and reduces heat absorption while also being waterproof. Palm bone, a regionally predominant material, is used in lattices, doors, and railings, while legally harvested macuil wood adds elegance to the interiors. Clay tiles enhance details and cover the exterior floors.
The building’s shape was conceived to maximize livable space while preserving the site’s existing vegetation. The resulting curves and contours produce visual fluidity and elegance, drawing inspiration from the female form.
Estudio Carroll’s mission is to design spaces that inspire, uplift, and transform, creating architecture that harmonizes with nature and celebrates local culture.
