Can a quality laser measure tool work in measuring objects in contact?

Typically, a laser measuring tool is used to calculate the distance between two bodies that are not in contact. This is done with the help of a laser beam but if you are trying to measure the size of a single object, you can always do that with tape. 

A laser beam can also be used in this case by placing it in front of the object to measure the distance.
