Wine Country Barn, a residential addition in Northern California designed by Malcolm Davis Architecture (MDa), seamlessly integrates modern architectural principles with the natural landscape of the Wine Country. The structure envisioned as a separate entertainment barn and guest house, adds significant functional and aesthetic value to the homeowners’ weekend retreat. This project, which marks the second collaboration between MDa and the homeowners, showcases the effective use of local materials and sustainable design practices, emphasizing energy efficiency and a minimal environmental footprint.
Situated in the heart of Northern California Wine Country, the striking new structure known as the Wine Country Barn exemplifies the seamless integration of modern architecture with the natural environment. The project emerged from a close collaboration between Malcolm Davis Architecture (MDa) and dedicated clients aiming to enhance their weekend home.
Originally considering an expansion of their existing house, the homeowners shifted towards creating a completely separate entertainment barn and guest house. Inspired by regional rustic barns, MDa’s design incorporates modern details, ensuring the new structure complements its surroundings.
MDa collaborated with the landscape design team Lucas & Lucas to integrate the building with the estate seamlessly. The barn features a guest suite, covered parking, and an outdoor kitchen and living area, all designed to merge with the lush landscape. This integration creates a cohesive wine country complex that unites the original house and pool with exquisite landscaping and strategic site lines.
The architectural approach included using locally sourced redwood siding, nodding to the area’s history as a mill town. A thoughtful blend of timber, shapes, and volumes echoes the local architectural style and blends naturally with the picturesque environment. Emphasizing sustainability, the design team applied passive techniques that utilize natural elements for comfort and reduce reliance on mechanical and electrical systems. This approach not only respects the natural climate but also enhances the energy efficiency of the barn. Grant Gibson Interior Design played a crucial role in the interior, which adheres to a timeless aesthetic.
Marking their second collaboration, this project provided the homeowners, who previously worked with MDa on their San Francisco residence, a tranquil retreat distinct from the urban setting of their primary home, allowing them to enjoy more outdoor time in the region’s temperate and peaceful rural environment.
