The 24,000 m² College, designed to provide ample open learning spaces and state-of-the-art facilities, won a competition in 2006. It fosters interaction and diversity, promoting both formal and informal learning among students.

The College, replacing an inefficient 1960s building at Paddington Green, features a contemporary design with a Scandinavian influence. The structure’s geometric forms revolve around a terraced atrium, fostering a flexible and unified organization.

The atrium, with visual connections across floors and extending to the facade on some levels, serves as the dynamic heart of the College, promoting natural light and interaction.

Public areas, including an exhibition space, theatre, and café, are situated near the main entrance, enhancing community connectivity. The interior features light timber panels contrasting with exposed concrete, highlighting its Scandinavian design roots.

The building prioritizes sustainability and energy efficiency, aiming to reduce maintenance costs and its carbon footprint over its lifespan.

College Principal Keith Cowell expressed pride in the new campus, emphasizing its open and inclusive atmosphere tailored to the diverse student body. The City of Westminster College, opened to students on January 10, 2011, marks schmidt hammer lassen architects’ first completed project in the UK. Upcoming projects include The Learning Zone in Sheffield and the University of Aberdeen New Library, both set to open in 2011.
