The Duyen Casa II Hotel, designed by Block Architects in Cao Lãnh, Đồng Tháp Province, Vietnam, transforms a rural home into a resort space emphasizing regional craftsmanship and sustainable materials. Completed in 2020, the project combines practicality with cultural resonance, revitalizing local design traditions while maintaining functionality.

Located in a quite village in Southern Vietnam, the site spans 1,000 m² amid expansive paddy fields and fruit gardens.

The existing structures consisted of a tiled-roof front section and a rear area covered with metal sheets. The client requested a cost-effective renovation to create a resort that reflects the area’s simplicity and traditional aesthetic.

The design incorporates elements inspired by local handicraft techniques. Materials such as tiles, round steel bars, and bricks were used to create earthenware-like curtains that act as a cooling layer, shielding the roofs from direct sunlight and reducing thermal radiation. This approach enhances the visual cohesion of the property while improving its environmental performance.

The structural framework was largely preserved. Some walls were removed, and partitions for bathrooms were introduced. Bedrooms were designed to face eastward, overlooking the front yard, while the kitchen and shared facilities at the back open to a pool, enabling versatile indoor and outdoor use. Locally sourced materials and furniture, including repurposed elements from the original house, were utilized to keep the renovations sustainable and budget-friendly.
