G House is a contemporary coastal residence in Mount Martha, Victoria, designed by Wolf Architects to accommodate evolving patterns of living through a highly adaptable architectural framework. Originally commissioned for a young family, the project took an unexpected turn when ownership changed during the design phase. Rather than requiring a complete redesign, the home’s flexible spatial organization proved equally suited to its new occupants, a retired couple seeking a modern residence with expansive bay views. The project demonstrates how thoughtful planning can transcend individual client requirements while maintaining architectural integrity. Distinctive material contrasts define the residence, balancing a tactile, grounded street presence with a bright, open rear elevation oriented toward the landscape. Inside, natural materials, generous volumes, and integrated greenery create a calm and cohesive living environment that emphasizes longevity, craftsmanship, and a close relationship with its coastal setting.

The story of G House is defined not by its architecture alone but by its remarkable capacity to adapt. During the design process, the original clients decided to sell the property, transferring the project to a retired couple before construction commenced. Rather than revisiting the design from the beginning, only minimal refinements were necessary, demonstrating the strength of a layout conceived around flexibility rather than highly personalized requirements. The completed residence stands as an example of architecture capable of supporting different stages of life without compromising its original vision.

Responding to its prominent coastal setting in Mount Martha, the residence presents two contrasting architectural identities. From the street, the home adopts a robust and tactile expression through folded charcoal roof forms that project over warm spotted gum batten cladding. A rammed-earth column anchors the entrance, while bluestone crazy paving, ornamental reeds, and a stone water bowl establish a carefully composed arrival sequence rooted in natural materials. In contrast, the rear elevation opens toward the bay with crisp white volumes, a dark upper level that appears to float above the lower floor, and a raised swimming pool framed by limestone.

Inside, the architectural language continues through a restrained palette that celebrates texture and craftsmanship. A rammed-earth feature wall extends through the center of the home, subtly illuminated by concealed lighting that accentuates its natural character. A floating staircase with oak treads rises through a double-height void, introducing visual lightness while reinforcing the home’s generous spatial proportions. These elements create a sequence of interconnected spaces that balance openness with warmth.

Natural materials remain central throughout the interior, where American oak joinery, travertine-lined bathrooms, and a freestanding oval bathtub contribute to a refined yet understated atmosphere. An internal planted courtyard introduces daylight and vegetation into the center of the plan, strengthening the connection between interior spaces and the surrounding landscape. This integration of nature enhances both the environmental quality and the everyday experience of the home.

Attention to detail is evident from the entrance, where a custom timber pivot door distinguished by a split semi-circular handle establishes the home’s carefully considered design language. Throughout the residence, each architectural gesture contributes to a cohesive composition that balances material richness with spatial clarity. By accommodating two distinctly different client briefs with only minor modifications, G House demonstrates how enduring architectural principles and adaptable planning can produce a residence with lasting relevance, capable of evolving alongside its occupants while remaining firmly connected to its coastal context.
