A distinctive residential structure was completed in Isenbüttel, near Braunschweig, Germany, under the architectural vision of Ann-Kathrin Lepke and Busch & Takasaki Architekten in 2023. Captured vividly through the lens of photographer Ruben Beilby, this house merges a minimalist aesthetic with functional design, standing out in its suburban setting. The design respects local architectural heritage while incorporating modern elements such as large openings and a refined material palette, including birch, clay, and aluminum.

The residential house in Isenbüttel near Braunschweig integrates smoothly into the surrounding neighborhood through its scale, silhouette, and color palette. Nevertheless, the house distinguishes itself with a minimalistic design style and significant openings in an otherwise consistent facade, which imparts a unique character.

A homage to the local architectural heritage of farms and stables is apparent in the wooden structure with a pitched roof. The street-facing side of the house is designed to appear closed, focusing instead on the spacious interior and the garden. The prominent dormer was designed to meet this need, enhancing natural light in the living room below and facilitating pleasant air circulation in the summer through a chimney effect.

The house’s core, centrally located and housing a bathroom, kitchen, and stairs to the first floor, efficiently organizes the living spaces. These areas are adaptable with sliding doors, removing the hallways’ necessity. The living room, open kitchen, bedroom, and bathtub are designed to provide expansive views of the garden.

The upper floor accommodates a guest room illuminated by a dormer and includes a bathroom. The exterior’s vertical cladding of local larch wood extends to the roof, covered with standing seam zinc, ensuring a unified aesthetic in both material and hue.

The interior emphasizes essential materials, featuring birch for built-in furniture and the staircase, clay-plastered walls, polished screed, and aluminum in the kitchen. The construction of the house was largely undertaken by the client’s family, notably supervised by their daughter Anni, reflecting a deep personal connection to the building process.
