Jury Cafe, designed by Biasol in Melbourne, Australia, is located within the historic bluestone walls of Pentridge Village—formerly Pentridge Prison, which was decommissioned in 1997. Completed in 2014, the cafe revitalizes this former prison site by contrasting the dark bluestone with bright colors and natural materials, creating an inviting atmosphere that respects the site’s dark history. The interior design incorporates playful elements and raw materials to soften the historical space, along with custom furniture and greenery, balancing its past with a vibrant future and addressing the unique challenges of transforming a prison into a welcoming cafe.
The design contrasts the dark bluestone walls with a bright color palette and blond timbers. A mix of raw materials, including plywood, structural timbers, and concrete, was used to form a geometric color pattern on the feature wall. This playful effect rejuvenates the space, moving it away from its somber past and embracing a more vibrant future.
Greenery from Pop Plant further softens the space, while bespoke tables and stools made from natural materials add a touch of warmth. The resulting cafe is a place that juxtaposes history with modernity, where the once austere environment is now lively and welcoming.
