The Library and Culture Centre in Allerød, Denmark, designed by Primus Arkitekter, was completed in 2015 as an extension of the former Fritz Hansen furniture factory. The project includes a cultural center and a children’s library, blending the site’s industrial heritage with contemporary design. A shed-style roof was introduced to enhance spatial openness and natural light, while black wooden cladding integrates lighting elements, creating a striking glow at night.
As part of a larger urban transformation effort in Allerød, the project also plays a role in revitalizing the city center. The extension and renovation of the library and cultural center are accompanied by new urban spaces and the expansion of the nearby Mungo park Theatre, contributing to the cultural and social fabric of the area.
The new extension is divided into two distinct areas. One functions as a cultural center, which can be adapted for theater performances or community events. The space is linked to the existing library and serves as the children’s library.
The building features a shed-style roof that enhances spatial volume, allows natural light in, and supports the acoustics of the interior. It also reflects the site’s industrial past while optimizing the roof for solar panel installation.
The facade is clad in black wooden lapped boards with integrated lighting, creating a luminous effect at night. Large openings in the original structure establish connections between reading areas and the surrounding square, bringing the library’s activities closer to the urban environment.
