The Metropol Parasol, designed by J. Mayer H in collaboration with Arup, revitalized Seville’s Plaza de la Encarnación, filling a void left by the destruction of the Mercado de la Encarnación over 30 years earlier. Completed in 2011, the massive timber structure, one of the largest of its kind globally, reintroduces vibrancy to the city center with its contemporary design. Metropol Parasol serves as a hub for markets and restaurants, reinvigorating the economic and social fabric of Seville. The project strikes a balance between preserving Seville’s historic character and embracing modern architectural innovation.
The demolition of Seville’s Mercado de la Encarnación created a significant void in the city’s urban fabric, leaving the heart of the city center empty for over thirty years. The market had been a vital source of life for the area, and in its absence, the Plaza de la Encarnación struggled, further impacted by economic decline. In April 2011, Jürgen Mayer H and Arup introduced a solution for Seville’s central square with a design that infused a modern spirit into the historic and traditional space.
Metropol Parasol, one of the largest timber structures in the world, draws both residents and visitors back to the city center with its striking form. Housing a variety of markets and restaurants, the dynamic shape of the parasols provides a new focal point for activity in the plaza. This innovative structure demonstrates how architecture can drive economic and social revitalization in even the most historically rich urban areas. By combining forward-thinking design with a respect for Seville’s cultural heritage, the project allows the city to preserve its past while positioning itself for future success.
