Salitre 191 residential building by Fragmentos in Lisbon reimagines a historic structure near Avenida da Liberdade, converting it into six apartments. Located within a cultural heritage area, the building retained original elements like flooring, wooden doors, limestone pillars, and ceramic tiles. A new upper floor was added, and the patio was redesigned to incorporate both parking and leisure space, creating a functional yet historically respectful residential environment.
Just a few meters from Avenida da Liberdade, the building is situated within Lisbon’s Urban Rehabilitation Area and a Protected Immovable Cultural Heritage Zone. Over time, extensive changes and modifications have significantly altered its original character, transforming it from its initial function as an educational facility.
The intervention focused on converting and refurbishing the historic building into a six-apartment residence. This transformation included adding an upper extension to the existing four floors. Throughout the renovation, the original materials and finishes that defined the building’s character were carefully preserved and restored, including the original flooring, internal wooden doors and shutters, limestone pillars, vaulted ceilings, and ceramic tiles along the exterior. The patio, initially designated solely for parking, was redesigned to serve both as a parking area and a leisure space, creating an inviting outdoor area.
