The site of The Courtyard, designed by M9 Design Studio, was originally part of the garden of the clients’ grandparents’ house. The design aimed to minimize impact on the existing house, preserving much of the garden and positioning the new building’s entrance to open onto this space. The two-story, rectangular building features a flat roof, corrugated metal walls, and a mild steel frame. The first-floor event space is enclosed with corrugated polycarbonate sheets to maximize natural light, with interior drapes for light control during events. The structure is visible inside, with black-painted steel I-beams, exposed ceilings, and a mix of concrete and timber flooring. At night, the building glows like a light-box along the streetscape.
The site was originally part of the garden of the clients’ grandparents’ house. The new building was designed to minimize its impact on the existing house, both during and after construction. To maintain a connection with the original home, the design preserved as much of the garden as possible and positioned the entrance of the new building to open onto this garden space.
The aim was to create a distinctive building using mass-produced components, balancing high quality with affordability and a short construction timeline. The two-story building features a rectangular plan, flat roof, corrugated metal walls, and a mild steel frame. The first-floor multi-purpose event space is enclosed with a corrugated polycarbonate sheet façade, using a thin, translucent material in place of traditional exterior walls to maximize natural light in the interior.
The interior of the polycarbonate sheet façade is lined with rich textured drapes to control natural light during specific shows and events. The windows, made from the same material as the walls, do not provide extra light but can be opened for ventilation. At night, the building glows from within, turning it into a large light-box along the streetscape. The interior showcases a black-painted steel structure made of I-beams, with exposed deck sheet ceilings, and floors that combine concrete and timber.
