The Orchestra Park by SoBA is an 8,500-square-meter public landscape completed in 2023 in Kunshan’s Huaqiao Economic Development Zone. Located between two high-density residential areas and along the confluence of two rivers, the project transforms a previously vacant urban site into a community-oriented green space. The design responds to mature camphor and dawn redwood trees, adjacent wetlands, and existing terrain through a strategy of ecological preservation and limited intervention. Inspired by Jiangnan Silk and Bamboo music, a Kunshan intangible cultural heritage tradition recognized in 2007, the park translates musical rhythm and instrument forms into curved circulation, sculpted landforms, and recreational spaces. Its program includes a skatepark, climbing area, fitness playground, open-air theater, bamboo grove pathways, musical fountain plaza, small music classroom, shaded exploration paths, sound-interactive installations, and a riverside viewing platform, creating a layered public environment for leisure, play, movement, and connection with nature.

The Orchestra Park approaches landscape design as a form of cultural interpretation rather than simple urban beautification. In a rapidly urbanizing residential district, SoBA used the site’s ecological conditions and Kunshan’s musical heritage to create a public realm where movement, sound, shade, and play form a continuous experience. The project’s significance lies in how it brings together a preserved woodland, riverside access, and contemporary recreational infrastructure without allowing one element to dominate the other.

The design takes inspiration from Jiangnan Silk and Bamboo music, a regional tradition associated with instruments such as the bamboo flute and erhu. Recognized as part of Kunshan’s intangible cultural heritage in 2007, the tradition is known for graceful melodies and rhythmic fluidity. SoBA translated these qualities into a spatial language of smooth lines, curving circulation, and layered terrain. Rather than using musical references as surface decoration, the park abstracts the profiles and rhythms of silk and bamboo instruments into paths, landforms, and activity zones.

A circular jogging path provides the main organizing structure of the park. It connects Xugongqiao Road with the residential communities to the north and south, improving everyday access while defining the park’s internal arrangement. This loop divides the site into two primary zones: a riverside greenbelt and a more active recreational area. The result is a clear but flexible layout that supports both quiet immersion in nature and energetic public use.

The riverside greenbelt is designed through minimal intervention. Existing woodland and vegetation are preserved to maintain the atmosphere of the site, while new elements are carefully inserted along the riverbank and beneath the tree canopy. A waterside viewing platform opens the park toward the river, and winding exploration paths guide visitors through shaded areas. Sound-interactive installations add a playful dimension to the landscape, linking the park’s musical theme with direct sensory engagement.

Planting design reinforces the layered character of the greenbelt. Open and enclosed areas alternate across the site, allowing the landscape to shift between broad visibility and dense shade. Seasonal changes, mature trees, river views, and natural planting create a setting for relaxation while strengthening residents’ connection to the local ecology. The park’s quieter areas work as a counterpoint to the intensity of surrounding residential development.

The recreational zone makes use of the site’s natural undulations to create a more dynamic public environment. Here, the two-dimensional outlines of Jiangnan Silk and Bamboo instruments are transformed into abstract three-dimensional spaces. The skatepark, climbing area, fitness playground, open-air theater, bamboo grove pathways, musical fountain plaza, and small music classroom give the park a broad civic role, supporting children, teenagers, adults, and older residents within a shared landscape.

The Orchestra Park demonstrates how a compact urban site can become both a neighborhood amenity and a cultural landscape. By preserving mature trees and natural landforms while introducing inclusive programs, SoBA created a public space that balances ecological restraint with social vitality. The project functions as a green oasis, a recreational ground, and a cultural marker for the Huaqiao community.
