Utsav House is a single-family home designed by Bijoy Jain in Satirje, Maharashtra, India, integrates into the barren landscape with four black basalt walls enclosing a shaded courtyard. The house features pools, pavilions, and a garden, creating a sheltered living environment.
The home’s spaces are arranged along the perimeter walls, which define and support the structures. Varying heights accommodates the interior functions and dimensions.
The construction utilizes concrete slabs, basalt stone walls, and wood framing. Walls and floors are stained with pigmented cement plaster, mimicking the dry summer grasses to blend the building into the landscape.
The living spaces open to the southwesterly breeze, protected from sun and rain by a large roof. Like local irrigation tanks, a central long narrow pool collects rainwater, which overflows into the garden.
Different levels within the house unobstructed views of the horizon and surrounding hills, while inward views provide intimacy and refuge.
