VLM Bridge, designed by AND-RÉ in 2009, is a 160-meter-long pedestrian and bike bridge in Vilamoura, Portugal. This project, part of a larger urban intervention, serves as a functional structure and a site-specific artwork, enhancing the pedestrian experience by directing attention to the scenic lake views and creating a unique visual journey.
The project aims to break the visual and auditory connection with the adjacent street, directing attention towards the lake view where the sun sets over the golf course. This design enhances the site’s specific nature, providing a surprising and restful space for users to enjoy the views.
A 25×2.5-meter structural wood wall separates the street from the landscape. One side offers a place to rest and enjoy the calm sunset views, while the other, with an urban identity, follows a straight plane parallel to the lane, intended for quick observation from passing vehicles.
Artist Domingos Loureiro created an artwork of 180 wood boards painted on both sides, forming two 25-meter-long images. These images are invisible from the front but revealed at a 45-degree angle, creating a dynamic visual experience for drivers, akin to movie frames.
The bridge thus serves as an exceptional point in the pedestrian route, blending functionality with artistic expression to create a unique and engaging space for the community.
