Wyndham Clubhouse by MIA Design Studio is a hospitality building set in the enchanting coastal resort of Phu Quoc, Vietnam. Envisioned to meld modernity with tradition, the design draws inspiration from the lantern, creating an atmospheric entry point that enhances the nighttime resort experience. Employing local materials like bamboo, bare brick, wood, and grindstone, the project not only emphasizes the skill of local artisans but also aims to optimize the environmental conditions inherent to tropical climates. This piece explores how the thoughtful use of space and light contributes to the building’s functionality as a tranquil retreat while reinforcing the enduring values of traditional architecture.

The project is a hospitality building situated in the coastal resort of Phu Quoc. The architects envisioned the building with a modern yet traditional approach, symbolized through the image of a lantern. This design choice aims to impart a soft, gentle illumination at night and serves as a prominent feature at the resort’s entrance. The primary material used is bare brick, chosen to highlight the local masonry’s meticulousness and precision.

During daylight, the brickwork effectively blocks and softens sunlight while enabling excellent natural ventilation, essential for tropical climates. The lobby features a courtyard, central to the design, underscoring the enduring values of traditional architecture. Techniques to manipulate natural light and create wind convection across all spaces are strategically implemented, crafting a unique ambiance conducive to relaxation. The use of indigenous materials such as bamboo, bare brick, wood, and grindstone further strengthens the connection to the locale.

The project prompts reflection on the fundamental role of architecture in enhancing human life, questioning whether its ultimate value lies in providing shelter and enabling individuals to fully experience the natural elements of sun, wind, grass, and water. This architectural endeavor not only addresses functional needs but also engages deeply with its cultural and environmental context.
