The Tiefes Haus reinterprets the spatial logic of an existing structure, transforming a constrained residential plot into a layered and cohesive living environment. Designed by Henning Grahn Architektur in collaboration with Marc Flick, the project integrates retained elements of the former building while introducing a clear architectural order shaped by sectional variation, material contrast, and environmental responsiveness. The elongated form addresses the narrow site through a sequence of split levels that generate diverse spatial conditions without sacrificing continuity. A restrained palette of raw concrete, oak, and terrazzo reinforces a balance between solidity and warmth, while a dark exterior facade unifies the composition. North-oriented glazing ensures controlled daylight and thermal performance, allowing the house to maintain comfort while maximizing transparency. The result is a carefully calibrated dwelling that merges spatial complexity with functional clarity.

We try to develop projects that pursue the clearest possible idea and approach in design and content. We welcome clients who support this and are open to experimental solutions.

The Tiefes Haus approaches the limitations of its narrow site as a catalyst for spatial invention, using the elongated footprint to establish a continuous yet varied interior sequence. Rather than removing the existing structure entirely, the design incorporates portions of its walls, allowing the past configuration to inform a new architectural framework. This reinterpretation of split-level organization introduces subtle shifts in elevation across the ground floor, creating differentiated zones that enhance both perception and use.

A deliberate setback at the ground level marks the entrance, providing a modest transition between street and interior. The house is organized into two primary zones connected by a double-height gallery that serves as the spatial and visual core. This central void, defined by expansive glazing, draws daylight deep into the plan while reinforcing connections between levels. The front portion accommodates more public and flexible functions, including reception and guest areas, reflecting a degree of openness in the domestic program.

Circulation is articulated through an open staircase that links all levels, reinforcing continuity and movement throughout the house. Toward the rear, the atmosphere becomes more intimate, with the kitchen and living spaces oriented toward the garden. This progression from public to private is gradual, guided by changes in level, light, and spatial enclosure rather than rigid separation.

The upper floor further develops this sectional strategy, dividing the plan into areas for children and sleeping. A concrete walkway spans the gallery void, establishing both physical connection and visual dialogue between the two zones. Above, a continuous roof element unifies the composition, tying together the building’s distinct volumes into a coherent architectural expression.

Material choices underscore the project’s balance between robustness and refinement. Exposed concrete surfaces provide a structural clarity, while oak-framed elements introduce warmth and tactility. Polished terrazzo floors contribute a reflective quality that enhances natural light within the interiors. Externally, the dark facade consolidates varied window formats into a unified envelope, while the north-facing orientation of the glazing minimizes overheating and ensures consistent, diffuse daylight throughout the living spaces.
